A Life Update Before Vacation

Hi Friends!

Just popping in for my last update before we leave for vacation.

So yesterday, this happened:

(Warning…these first pictures are a little gross so if you’re squeamish, scroll down a ways….)

IMG 5376

To be more exact, that happened yesterday night. About an hour before the vet closed. A mere 36 hours before we leave for vacation. It didn’t look that bad when it first happened. It didn’t really bleed that much…but we knew we needed to have a better look at it. So we got out the clippers and hubby buzzed the hair all around it so we could see what was really going on. Then we stuck Abner in the bath tub and cleaned it out. Then we had an extensive debate about whether we should take him to the vet. In the end, we ended up going. We’re not exactly sure how this happened, but our guess is that he scraped his side on a board or nail trying to chase something under the deck. We decided that even if he didn’t need stitches, he might need antibiotics so we piled in the car and headed over. Luckily we only live 5 minutes from our vet and they could see us right away.

15 minutes, 5 staples and $100 later we were on our way.

IMG 5381

Abner was a champ and just stood there while the vet stapled him so we lucked out and didn’t have to pay to have him sedated. They gave him a cone and told us he had to wear it the whole time he’s at the kennel.

IMG 5387

That didn’t go over well. He’s never worn one before and when we put it on, he basically just stood there with his head down and refused to move or walk. Luckily, my in-laws have a donut collar for their golden when he get’s hot spots and I ran over to borrow that from them. So far it’s working much better. You can tell Abner is much more comfortable in it and the wound is close enough to his shoulder that he can’t reach it.

IMG 5389

Soooooo i’m crossing my fingers and spending the morning watching him to see how he does…and then this afternooon the boys are off to camp. He’s walking around fine with this on so hopefully he’ll do alright at the kennel with it. I’m super stressed and really hoping the people at the kennel will keep a close eye on him and make sure the staples stay in and don’t get infected.

But what can you do? Sometimes life is just out of your control.

In other news….

IMG 5355

I got my nails done yesterday.

IMG 5356

My foodie penpals box came!

IMG 5366

IMG 5375

I used the pasta that my penpal sent me to make a big pasta salad,
which we ate for dinner with black bean burgers.

IMG 5373

I went on my first CONSISTENT three mile run in a long time.
I ran all three miles at a 9:10-9:15 min/mile pace.
Usually I start out way to fast…but I’m working on it!

IMG 5374

I started packing healthy snacks for the plane.
Fruit, nuts, seeds, granola/protein bars…
Since it IS vacation, I treated us to some snacks we love but don’t usually buy:
Quaker Oat Squares, Chex Mix and goldfish!
They’re all still relatively healthy so I can feel good about eating them…
But since we don’t usually buy them, they’re a nice treat!

IMG 5398

I started packing last night. It looks like my closet threw-up on my floor.
Usually I’m a last-minute packer but I’m glad I started early for this trip.

IMG 5399

I will probably cry when I drop these two off later.

Oh well, like I said…some things in life are just out of your control.

Oh, and tomorrow?

napali kauai raft tours 3

Yeah….I’ll be here 🙂

Enjoy!

Poor Abner!!! Our old dog got a mysterious wound like that once, but they had to put her out, etc. so it costs us about $300. I hope he feels better soon!

And I REALLY hope you have an awesome vacation!! 🙂

Bless Abner’s heart! Last year, the day before we were leaving for Mexico, our lab (Harley) suddenly couldn’t stand up or walk without whimpering and crying. You could barely touch her back and it would start to spasm. I had to rush her to the vet so they could check her out, and they gave her a steroid shot which seemed to help. It scared me to death leaving the country with my baby being in pain!

    Have a GREAT trip!

One of our dogs had a very similar injury…not sure exactly what happened either but hers required actual stitches. She hated the cone so I didn’t have it on her when I could watch her…little sucker still got a stitch out during that time so we had to go get that part stapled and the cone stayed on the rest of the time! Enjoy your trip!

Oh man – we’ve had a couple of incidents like that with Hank right before he heads to the kennel too – I get so stressed leaving the pups when we go away let alone when something like this happens, but the kennel staff are always great and he always does just fine…so don’t worry!!!!

Have a wonderful trip —- that last picture looks ah-freakin-mazing!!!

Poor Abner! Something similar happened to my dog when I was a kid. I noticed her repeatedly licking herself. When I took a look we saw big tear, very similar to your poor guy. Vet suspected she caught some barbed wire or possibly a stick.

Good luck and have a GREAT vacation.

Aww, poor little guy! He does look happier in that donut…I didn’t even know they made those! Our old beagle used to have to wear a cone occasionally…she would always end up running into walls because she couldn’t really see. One of those funny things you feel bad laughing about.

Have fun on vacation! I’m sure they will take good care of your babies. =)

that collar is awesome! I hate it when my dog has a cone on, he runs into all the furniture and chips it and the poor guy just cant stop getting it caught on things. I will definitely need to remember this if he ever needs one again!

I saw the picture last night!! Poor guy!!!! (And of course, things either happen when my husband’s out of town – like when our pup almost died after a spay surgery and discovered she had a clotting disorder! – or when we’re all about to head out of town!)

SO jealous of your vacation, girl…I could totally use one. Have an awesome time!!!

That looks like Kauai! It’s our favorite island – we just went in December after we fell in love with it after our honeymoon (we married on Maui). I highly recommend hiking the napali coast back to Hanakapi’ai Falls. There’s just so much fun stuff to do there…and the Poke is amazing!!

Poor Mr. Pups! He seems totally chill with having a gash in his side – says a lot about his personality! Glad he saved you a few bucks by chilling out while he got stapled back together. That donut actually looks like something I’d use on a flight to Hawaii – maybe he was hoping you’d take him! Have a great trip! xoxo
